This is the third episode in our series on cholangiocarcinoma which aims to update clinicians on the latest developments in its diagnosis and management.
In this episode, Melinda Bachini discusses the use of biomarker testing in cholangiocarcinoma. From the perspective of a patient advocate, she explains how to relay complex information about biomarker testing to patients, and outlines what patients really want to know. Episode 1 - FGFR inhibitors: Mechanism and Activity on Resistance Mutations with Sameek Roychowdhury

This is the first episode in our series on cholangiocarcinoma which aims to update clinicians on the latest developments in its diagnosis and management.
In this episode, Dr. Sameek Roychowdhury discusses fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) inhibitors in the management of cholangiocarcinoma—how long they’ve been in use, and what we know about their efficacy and toxicity. Portrait Sameek Roychowdhury

Sameek Roychowdhury, MD PhD

Dr. Roychowdhury is Associate Professor of Medical Oncology at the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the James Cancer Hospital at the Ohio State University. He leads a multi-disciplinary precision cancer medicine team combining expertise in genomics, computer science, novel diagnostics, biology, and clinical trials to deliver precision cancer medicine to patients. Dr. Roychowdhury is Medical Director of a clinical grade Cancer Genomics Lab and leads precision medicine basket studies that focus on genetic markers rather than type of cancer. The team’s research has been funded by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and the American Lung Association.

Marina Baretti, MD

Dr. Marina Baretti is an Assistant Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. Dr. Baretti completed medical school at the University of Pisa, Italy, and she continued her medical training in Internal Medicine and Oncology at the University of Milan. She performed a research postdoctoral fellowship and a fellowship in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before joining the faculty in 2021. Dr. Baretti has had outstanding success in developing a research program in hepatobiliary cancer at Johns Hopkins with her particular focus on studying the impact of epigenetic therapies as immune sensitizers. She was the recipient of the 2018 American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award, and was awarded the 2020 Career Development Award for the MD Anderson Cancer Center’s pancreatic cancer NCI Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE). She is committed to the advancement of treatment for gastrointestinal (GI) cancer.

 
 
 
Portrait Melinda Bachini

Melinda Bachini

Melinda Bachini is a 13-year survivor of cholangiocarcinoma. Melinda is married, the mother of six children, and the grandmother to two. She is passionate about patient advocacy. Her experience with previous and current treatments allows great insight into patients participating in clinical trials. Her position as Director of Patient Services for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation allows Melinda to interact, support, and educate others touched by this cancer. She shares her story with as many cancer patients as possible to give courage to those in need.
Melinda serves on the NCI Patient Advocate Steering Committee (PASC), the ECOG-ACRIN GI Committee, the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Advocacy Committee, the NCI Council of Research Advocates, and the NCCN Hepatobiliary Guideline Panel. She participated as a panelist in the Cancer Moonshot – Community Oncology Event at the White House. In June 2017, she spoke with nine US Senators at NIH to share her personal story of how research has prolonged her life. Melinda has served as a Consumer Reviewer for the Department of Defense for several years.
