#3 Good Health and Well-Being
We aim to connect and advance health sciences and our products and services cater to the information needs of the health sciences community. The content we deliver advances scientific discoveries that help to improve health and well-being.
As easy access to scientific knowledge is more important than ever to support research, especially in these times, we are continuing to drive forward the transition to Open Access (OA). After launching our first OA journal in 2007, the volume of OA journals and articles has grown continuously, and we aim to continue pursuing this strategy in the future. We have also made access to our Fast Facts medical handbook series free for registered users.
We consider it our duty to support the fight against the coronavirus. This is why we have been enabling free access to our research articles on COVID-19 since February 2020. In addition, the first issue of our new journal Kompass Nutrition & Dietetics explores how nutritional and behavioral measures may mitigate the risk of a severe course of coronavirus infection.
We have also taken measures to ensure the continued health and safety of our colleagues, customers, and partners in this unprecedented situation, as outlined by the Chairwoman of our Board of Directors, Gabriella Karger.
Within SDG 3, our content specifically focuses on the following Targets
Target 3.1:
By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births.Selected Articles

#7 Affordable and Clean Energy
We place great value on the use of sustainable energy and other resources.
Within SDG 7, we specifically focus on the following Targets
Target 7.2:
By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.Renewable Energy
The energy we consume is produced through certified regional hydropower, and we make use of waste heat from a local refuse incineration plant in Basel. Similarly, the water we use is sourced locally at Hardwald and Lange Erlen.
Target 7.3:
By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.Energy Efficiency
In 2008 and 2009, the insulation of the building at our headquarters was modernized to save energy.
This diagram shows the heat consumption of headquarter building at Allschwilerstrasse 10 in Basel. The heat consumption dropped after the modernization of the insulation of the building. Other variations are due to different winter temperatures over the years.
We use paper with an ecolabel from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for our packaging material. Our publications are available digitally, and the small number of print copies has decreased continuously over the years. This also reduces the amount of energy used for shipping.
We raise awareness among our employees to promote the conscious use energy and other resources.
Testimonial
“Sustainability efforts, whether small or large, on an economic, social, and ecological level, are extremely important for Karger Publishers. Even as a medium-sized business, we would like to play our part. The SDG #3 Good Health and Well-Being is in line with our strategy, which aims to serve the information needs of our stakeholders in the ‘Cycle of Knowledge in Health Sciences’.”
Gabriella Karger, Publisher & Chairwoman of the Board of Directors
