Management of Chronic Liver Diseases

Selected articles on the management of chronic liver diseases.

This collection comprises selected articles that focus on the management of chronic liver diseases of global impact. Two original studies address non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The first one evaluates several non-invasive tests in the diagnosis and assessment of NAFLD. Serum-based tests are found to perform well in the diagnosis but less so in assessing advanced fibrosis. The second study explores the clinical relevance of circulating CC-chemokine ligand 2 in patients with NAFLD and finds it is linked to visceral adiposity but not associated with fibrosis. One study reports a higher risk of liver complications in treatment-ineligible and untreated patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection than in eligible and treated counterparts, arguing for expansion of treatment eligibility for HBV. Two studies concern risk prediction in patients with cirrhosis. One of them compares 11 risk scores for the prediction of 90-day mortality and the other constructs a classification model to distinguish profiles of decompensated cirrhosis with acute kidney injury. Lastly, a review discusses various aspects of small-for-size syndrome in partial liver transplantation with an emphasis on the importance of portal inflow. Collectively, these high-quality articles provide novel findings and insightful perspectives that may inform clinical care of people with a chronic liver disease.
